Numb Is a Signal, Not a Failure
REAL TALK is a space for honest writing about leadership, survival, and second chances. No hype. No easy answers. Just lived experience, hard lessons, and the truths we usually only admit to ourselves.
There’s a kind of tired that doesn’t feel like exhaustion.
It feels like… nothing.
No sharp sadness. No real joy. No urgency. No spark.
Just neutral. Flat. Functional.
You answer emails. You show up to meetings. You complete the task list. You say “I’m fine.”
And technically, you are.
But you’re not feeling much of anything.
Let’s be clear about something:
Numb is not a character flaw. It’s not weakness. It’s not you “losing your edge.”
Numbness is often your nervous system doing its job.
When stress has been constant… When responsibility has been heavy… When you’ve had to stay composed for too long…
Your system sometimes turns the volume down.
Not because you’re broken.
Because you’ve been bracing.
Professionals are especially skilled at this. We pride ourselves on steadiness. On resilience. On getting through.
But “getting through” without pause has a cost.
Numbness can be your internal dashboard light blinking quietly:
Something has been a lot for a while.
And instead of collapsing, you adapted.
You went neutral.
The problem isn’t that you feel numb.
The problem is when you start judging yourself for it.
“I should be more grateful.” “I should feel excited.” “What’s wrong with me?”
Nothing is wrong.
Your system may simply be asking for:
A slower pace
A real conversation
A boundary you’ve avoided
Rest that is emotional, not just physical
Numbness is not the opposite of strength.
Sometimes it’s the residue of being strong for too long.
Blind Spot Check
Where in your life have you been functioning… but not actually feeling?
And if numbness could speak, what would it say?
Try This
Don’t try to fix the numbness.
Just gently interrupt autopilot once this week.
Pause for 60 seconds.
Ask yourself:
What am I feeling right now, even if the answer is “nothing”?
If “nothing” had a texture, what would it be? Heavy? Foggy? Tight?
You’re not forcing emotion.
You’re rebuilding awareness.
And awareness is the first crack where feeling returns.
You are not failing.
You are adapting.
Now the question is:
What might you need, not to perform better, but to feel again?
